Over the past few months I have been focusing exclusively on my bird photography skills. This genre of photography has pushed my photography abilities the limit. During this time, I have identified 6 basic principles I now follow in order to continue improving my skills and to improve the quality of my images.

We arrived in Zion at a time of year when the weather is perfect and the crowds are small.

I have become all too familiar with the highs and lows associated with being a photographer. I have personally experienced getting to a point where I felt my photography was improving quickly and then all of a sudden started to struggle.

As landscape photographers, we are always taught that we need shoot early in the morning or during the “golden hour” and that anything we shoot outside of those hours, is not going to be any good. The more I shoot the more I realize just how wrong this line of thinking really is.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon here in Mesa, AZ. A recent storm had passed to the North of us so we were out running our errands on a pretty dreary kind of day.

As I rolled into the Lost Dutchman State Park, immediate excitement welled up inside me. The clouds were to the west which caused the sun light to just kiss the surface of Flat Iron.

There is no shortage of photo opportunities in Port Aransas and as an added bonus. the RV park we are in is located adjacent to the beach making it very convenient to head out and explore all the Gulf Coast has to offer.

I am always looking for images to capture and have been working on my moon photography skills a bit while here in Oklahoma City. There are actually a few challenges in moon photography

I think that one of the things that is often overlooked are the photo opportunities in the campgrounds we spend time in. So often its about setting up and heading out to explore the area when there are often a ton of photo ops right where we are camped.

Fall has arrived here in the northern part of the country and the weather is actually quite mild. The fall leaves are at their peak and of course that leads to more photo opportunities.

It was a rainy day here in Goodlettsville, TN and after a morning filled with errands, I decided to head out and grab a few images from my new Canon 5DSR along the tracks next to the RV park. Fall has finally arrived, the temps are dropping and the leaves are starting to finally turn color.

Now I am, by all accounts, an Apple fan boy. I have spent quite a bit of time behind the recent iPhones and still cannot get my head around how good these cameras really are. How can so much functionally be packed into this small form factor? How can we all of a sudden have a very capable digital camera always at our fingertips?

Today we headed out to explore “The District” in downtown Nashville. WhIle I have spent quite a bit of time in Nashville from back in my touring days, I have never really spent any time walking down Broadway.

As we sit here in Nashville, getting ready to head South for the winter, I ponder the travels from the past year. We have spent the vast majority of our lives in the West, so this year we decided to spend this summer in Northern Michigan, Western New York and Down East Maine and it did not disappoint.
